Two Different Stairs Solving Two Different Problems

A spiral staircase winds around a central pole in a tight circular footprint. It works well anywhere floor space is limited and traffic is light: a mezzanine, a loft, a rooftop access hatch, a second means of egress tucked into a corner. A curved staircase sweeps along a wider, open radius with no center pole at all. It needs more floor space than a spiral, but it carries more people more comfortably and it reads as a feature of the building rather than a fix for a tight spot.

What Each One Costs You in Space and Headroom

The tradeoff comes down to square footage against comfort. A spiral stair can fit into a footprint as small as a closet, but the tight radius means less headroom clearance through the turn and a harder time carrying anything large or awkward up or down it. A curved stair asks for a bigger stairwell, but the wider radius gives a steadier rise, better sightlines, and room to move furniture or equipment through it without a fight.

  • How many people use the stair, and how often
  • Whether large or awkward items need to travel on it
  • Headroom clearance through the full run, not just at the top and bottom
  • Whether the stair also needs to work as a design feature in a lobby or entry

How Each One Actually Gets Built

Curved stairs are usually built from steel stringers fabricated to follow a continuous radius, often as a monumental structural stair for a lobby or atrium. Spiral stairs are built around a center column, with each tread set at a fixed pitch as it winds around that pole. Both start the same way in our shop: design, drafting, and welding done in-house before anything ships for installation.

Because a curved stair follows one continuous radius, most of ours are built in sections in the shop, dry-fit to check the geometry, then set in place and finished solid once they are on site. A spiral stair's smaller footprint often lets more of it be completed in the shop and delivered closer to a finished unit, which can mean less disruption inside a building that is still occupied while the work happens.

Where Building Code Sets the Geometry for You

Commercial stairs are commonly built to a maximum 7 inch rise and a minimum 11 inch run, which works out to roughly a 32 degree pitch. That figure applies whether the stair is curved or spiral, but a spiral's tight footprint can make it harder to hit than a curved stair's wider one. That is part of why the geometry gets checked early, before steel gets cut, not after.

Which One Owners Usually End Up Choosing

In practice, a curved stair tends to win in a public lobby or entrance, somewhere the stair itself becomes part of the first impression of the building. A spiral tends to win in back-of-house circulation, rooftop equipment access, or anywhere floor space is already spoken for and the stair has to earn its footprint. Neither one is automatically the right answer. It depends on what the space around it is actually being asked to do, not just which shape looks better in a rendering.
