What Security Metalwork Actually Covers

Protecting a storefront's windows and doors is one of the most common calls we get from commercial property owners. Burglar bars provide direct bar or grille protection over glass and openings. Lintels give structural support over a window, door, or other opening in a wall, which matters whenever that opening is cut into a load-bearing surface. Embeds, steel plates or anchors set into concrete during construction, give later fabrication work a solid point to attach to instead of drilling into finished concrete after the fact.

These pieces work together more often than they get requested separately. A new storefront opening needs a lintel to carry the load above it before a burglar bar or a decorative grille ever gets installed in front of the glass. A property planning ahead for future signage, awnings, or security hardware benefits from embeds going in while the concrete is still being poured, rather than trying to anchor into a finished wall later. Thinking about all three together at the design stage, instead of one at a time as problems come up, usually produces a cleaner result.

Where Ornamental Work Still Belongs

Security metalwork does not have to look like a cage bolted onto a building. Scroll work and decorative detailing can be worked directly into a set of burglar bars or a security grille, so the same piece that protects the glass also adds something to how the storefront looks from the street. A lot of security and storefront work involves thinner gauge metal or a specialty finish than a heavy structural stair does, decorative grille bars, formed sheet, scroll detail. Heli-arc welding, a precise arc welding process, is suited to exactly that kind of work, where a heavier weld would warp the material or ruin the finish. It is one of the specialized capabilities we bring to a storefront job that a general contractor's crew usually cannot do in-house.

A property does not have to be new construction to add this kind of work. Retrofitting burglar bars, a security grille, or a set of grab bars onto an existing storefront is common, and the embeds and structural review that a brand new building gets built in from the start can usually be worked around on an older one instead.
